Thunder Insippio presented and facilitated a session on the Web 2.0 tool, Glogster, highlighting the benefits for educators and students. Interactive digital posters created in Glogster were on displayed throughout the historic area on VSTE Island.

Alfredo organized a VSTE Island Swap Meet. Everyone brought fun transferable inventory items to share with the group. Gestures, textures, clothes, and anything that could be transferred to another avatar was offered to swap. The swap meet had something for everyone.

Thunder organized a Halloween party with Joaquin Gustav performing live music for us on VSTE Island while everyone judged our spooky houses and danced the night away with good friends.

Terraforming Workshop – Cyndyl Enyo facilitated as members visited an open sim to learn how to terraform land. The workshop was led by a friend of Serena Offcourse, Trill Loma, and was differentiated for those totally new to terraforming and those who wished to learn strategies for adding style to terraforming.

"Summer Fun Night" at VSTE Island branching off to various summer fun venues. Each facilitator highlighted a fun place to visit and included its description in the circulating notecard given out at the start of the meeting. We'll also used a group chat so all members could keep in touch as they travel to various sims.

A sim hopping tour brought in a good crowd for our weekly meeting. Members were given a notecard with descriptions and landmarks to 4 sims selected from the various categories (Arts, Science Fiction, Mystery...) at Cyrus Hush's Expedition Central. They were also given the information for joining the VSTE Ning (vsteonline.ning.com) and SL group. If they took interesting snapshots while touring we asked them to post them to the ning site.

Thunder and Jazmemo put on the first VSTE Fashion Show with sixteen models each showing two outfits, one professional and one "fun." Pikskate Clip created a catwalk and Summer Nachtigal was our MC. Mo Hax filmed it and is working on the machinima in three parts.

Cyrus Hush took us on a tour of Virginia Colleges in SL: JMU and NOVA. He arranged for sim managers to take us on a tour of their respective sims.

Thunder arranged for guest speaker Doggie Jigsaw, sim ower of New Arizona and New Mexico. He talked about the importance of role play in some folks' lives. VSTE members then followed "Jigs" on a tour of his Frontier as Pioneers. Thunder and Alfredo shared two ways to make SL T-shirts. Thunder uses a new blank t-shirt and applies a photo taken in SL. She showed how to position the camera to make the front of your t-shirt have the image you want (be sure that is in the upper left corner of your photo.) Alfredo showed how he creates t-shirts from a template and a graphics program using layers. He recommened Paint.net, a free program for Windows that will do the trick. His You Tube video was a great resource.

Trig Inkpen and Thunder held the first VSTE in SL Math Night. We had about 30 participants. Trig shared how he uses the Greedy game with his high school math classes to teach probability and then we played! We had four tables differentiated by Greedy experience: Novice, Practicing, Masters, and Mixed. The winner of each table and a wild card player with a rose under their chair advanced to another round. The winner of the second round, Miss Amethyst H one a Greedy Table and a pendant.

Cyrus Hush took us on a tour of Ivy League college sims. We toured Harvard and Princeton. It's impressive to see what these institutions do with the SL platform. There were replicas of buildings on campus, mock courtrooms, and entire avatars you could copy and wear. I guess shopping and choosing hair and shoes isn't the point for Ivy Leaguers!

VSTE in SL group meeting was held on Monday, September 14, at 5:00pm SLT (8:00pm EDT). Mandie Mimulus (Marie Booz in RL) shared with 15 participants the new VSTE Island exhibit of the first Africans to arrive in Jamestown in 1619. The event was tied to the essential knowledge that all Virginia students must understand about this period of history. Participants were directed to the Teacher Resource Center on VSTE Island, where educators can find additional resources, lesson plans and an example of a student-created project that focus on the arrival of the first Africans.

There was a VSTE in SL group meeting on Monday, August 17, at 5:00pm SLT (8:00pm EDT). Cyrus Hush (Matt Poole RL) led 19 participants on a tour of the Chinese sims, Mao and Kowloon. Cyrus began the evening in VSTE Island Pavilion and then teleported the participants to special skybox to view media centered on the study of Chinese culture before leading the tours of the two Chinese sims. Cyrus had extensive notecards prepared including a communication notecard for group discussion and tour notecard.

On Tuesday, August 11, at 5:00pm SLT (8:00pm EDT) the VSTE Island Team along with Flying Story (Danny Arkin RL) presented VSTE Island and the virtual Jamestown Settlement at the ISTE’s Speaker Series in the Bandshell on ISTE Island. There were approximately 50 participants in the Bandshell audience and 32 visitors came to VSTE Island for a self-guided tour following the speaker’s series.

On Wednesday, July 22, at 5:00pm SLT (8:00pm EDT), pikskate Clip SL, demonstrated how to build a flag and attach a waving flag for 12 participants.

VSTE Island is hosting a Summer Building Institute on Mondays, July 13 and July 20 and Wednesdays July 15 and July 22. The Wednesday sessions are necessary as our guest builder, pikskate Clip SL, is unavailable on Mondays. The institute kicked off on Monday, July 13, at 5:00pm SLT (8:00pm EDT) with Mandie Mimulus (Marie Booz RL) demonstrating for 18 participants how to create transparent, phantom prim trees. Immediately following Mandie’s lesson, VSTE member, CoolestBean Brunswick SL, led a lesson in using Scratch4SL to create scripted objects. On Wednesday, July 15, at 5:00pm SLT (8:00pm EDT), pikskate Clip SL, demonstrated how to build flags with wind to make the flag wave for 21 participants.

Jazmemo Zimminy (Lisa Alconcel RL) led a tour of the British Council Isle for 17 participants to solve a Merlin mystery quest. A social with music of the Beatles and fireworks was held on VSTE Island after the tour.

The VSTE Team hosted the first annual VSTE in SL Field Day for 27 participants to celebrate the end of the school year. Alfredo Bedrosian (Al Doss RL) supplied bumper cars and watermelon throwers. Mandie Mimulus (Marie Booz RL) set up a challenge course with five events and facilitated a skydiving challenge.

VSTE in SL hosted a presentation from Henny Zimer, a middle school teacher in Montana, about Quest Atlantis. More than 30 avatars were in attendance. Henny had his QA teacher teammate and his QA mentor from Australia to help answer questions. Seveal people were excited to see how QA works and are very interested in using this educational Virtual World with students during the coming school year.

VSTE in SL celebrated Cinco de Mayo with a tour of Mi Casa and the three Visit Mexico sims. We played some interactive games designed for first year Spanish students, dressed in Myan costumes, rode horses, toured Mexico on the back of a dragonfly and explored historical recreations.

Alfredo Bedrosian (Al Doss RL) facilitated 18 participants in a discussion about Nings and used a Ning (http://vsteisland.ning.com/) as part of an interactive SL scavenger hunt. Participants needed to be members of the the Ning and traveled to different sims in Second Life where they collected photographs to post on the Ning to win Linden prizes.

VSTE facilitators presented VSTE Island and the Jamestown Settlement to 26 participants. The tour began at Virtual Pioneers on Lighthouse Learning Island and continued at VSTE Island. VSTE in SL held a group meeting on Monday, March 9, at 5:00pm SLT (8:00pm EDT). This was our first presentation in the VSTE Island Meeting Pavilion with more than 35 avatars participating. Janene Jewell (Janene Gorham RL) facilitated the first VSTE in SL annual meeting. VSTE board members Karen Richardson and Kay Lera co-presented. The presentation included both Power Point and video and highlighted VSTE’s commitment to promoting technology’s role in education. Janene expertly led a question and answer period at the end of the presentation using local text chat.

VSTE in SL group meeting was held on Monday, March 2, at 5:00pm SLT (8:00pm EDT) on VSTE Island. Thunder Insippo explained SL profiles to 22 VSTE newcomers—how to use them to connect with others or learn to hide them and be completely private. Participants learned how to take their own snapshot and upload the photo to their inventory and add to their profile. Alfredo Bedrosian (Al Doss RL) and Cyrus Hush (Matt Poole RL) were available to assist participants with taking snapshots with SL camera. Pocahontas Whybrow (Marie Booz RL) was available to give newcomers the $10L to upload these photos. Participants also participated in a Jamestown Settlement treasure hunt.

VSTE in SL held a VSTE Island Grand Opening celebration on Monday, February 23, at 4:30pm SLT (7:30pm EDT). The VSTE facilitators streamed a live concert from the Virginia Beach Convention Center into Second life, held a Jamestown Settlement treasure hunt and an evening social.

VSTE in SL held a group meeting on Monday, February 9, at 5:00pm SLT (8:00pm EDT). In honor of Lincoln’s birthday, thirteen participants visited Second Life’s Land of Lincoln. Daisyblue Hefferman SL, manager of this sim, presented an in depth overview of this extensive build. Participants were then able to tour the island on their own. An information notecard with VA SOL correlations was provided.

VSTE in SL group held its very first VSTE Island meeting on Monday, February 2, at 5:00pm SLT (8:00pm EDT). There were 32 participants in attendance, all members of VSTE. A notecard was prepared with landmarks to the island’s venues. Team members were available to answer questions and offer assistance. A social was held at the end of the meeting in the Island Community Center.

VSTE in SL group meeting was held on Monday, January 26, at 5:00pm SLT (8:00pm EDT), when we participated in the Second Life Educational Support Faire. There were 21 participants in attendance and they were given the opportunity to visit the Faire or attend one of the live sessions taking place in the Pavilion. This was the last VSTE in SL meeting at the old VSTE World HQ building on Eduisland 3. A small celebration with champagne toasts and fireworks marked the occasion.

RL teacher resources on presidential inaugurations were provided for participants.

Marie Booz (Mandie Mimulus SL) facilitated 5 attendees all from VBCPS (Louise Borgnine SL also stopped by prior to the event). Mandie took the group on a tour of a Second Life recreation of the Plymouth Settlement with a replica of the Mayflower ship. She created a scripted notecard with educator resources that included Scholastic’s interactive Mayflower voyage and Plimoth.org (the official Plimoth Plantation website).
